Gold Canyon has a new reason to celebrate with the opening of Dollar Up, a vibrant and affordable shopping destination right off the US-60 freeway between Mountain Brook Road and Superstition Mountain Drive. The store is quickly gaining attention for its wide variety of products, welcoming atmosphere, and the story behind its creation.

The “Miracle Molecule”

Dollar Up is owned by Joanne “Joey”, her husband Mark, and their business partner Phil. Mark and Phil are both lifelong Valley firefighters, while Joey is the business dreamer whose vision of opening a community-focused store brought everything together.

The idea came together during a casual conversation. Phil mentioned he hoped to start a business after retirement—something like a food truck or coffee shop in Gold Canyon or Queen Valley. Joey shared her vision for a discount store designed with the community in mind, and the concept clicked immediately. A partnership was formed, and plans began to take shape.

The Perfect Location

From the start, Joey knew exactly where she wanted the store to be. She had her eye on an iconic Gold Canyon building she always thought was a perfect fit. When the landlord heard about their plans, he backed the vision wholeheartedly, offering support through tenant improvements and favorable terms. After years of research and preparation, the dream was finally ready to open its doors.

A Store for Everyone

Dollar Up is more than just another discount shop. It’s a combination of a dollar store, party supply shop, and home goods store—all rolled into one convenient location. While not every item costs exactly a dollar, prices are kept low and affordable, giving residents excellent value without having to travel far.

The selection includes:

Home goods for everyday living

Party supplies and decorations

Cleaning products and essentials

Gifts, candy, and seasonal items

Think of it as a blend of Dollar Tree and Party City—only with a friendlier, brighter, and more personal feel.

A Fun, Welcoming Experience

Walking into Dollar Up, shoppers immediately notice the difference. The store is clean, well-organized, and filled with natural light. Even better, the owners themselves can often be found behind the counter or on the floor, greeting customers and making sure every visit feels personal.

That kind of hands-on ownership is rare these days, and it gives the store a fun, neighborly vibe that reflects the spirit of Gold Canyon itself.

Looking Ahead

Dollar Up is already serving the community, but the owners are planning a grand opening celebration this fall—likely in October or November. The AZ Courier News will be there to cover the festivities, and we encourage our readers to stop by and see what the excitement is all about.

In the meantime, drop in and explore this new local favorite. With its affordable prices, wide selection, and welcoming atmosphere, Dollar Up is quickly becoming Gold Canyon’s go-to spot for everyday essentials and party fun.
