In the heart of Arizona’s bustling metropolis lies a hidden treasure trove for fishing enthusiasts – the urban angler’s haven. To uncover the secrets of urban angling in the Phoenix area, I sat down with Tim Hawkes, a seasoned fisherman and dedicated employee at Mesa’s renowned Liar’s Korner Bait and Tackle shop. With decades of experience navigating Arizona’s waters, Tim shared invaluable tips and insights for both novice and seasoned anglers alike.

Embracing the Urban Waters

Tim’s roots run deep in Arizona soil, and so does his passion for fishing. “I’ve been fishing in the Phoenix area my whole life,” Tim revealed with a grin. “There’s something about the urban waters that always drew me in – the thrill of reeling in a catch amidst the city’s hustle and bustle.”

When asked about his favorite urban fishing spots, Tim’s expertise shone through. While he may not be an avid urban angler himself, his recommendations are a testament to his extensive knowledge of the local fishing scene. “For those venturing into urban angling, I’d recommend exploring the Salt River, Red Mountain Park, and the Gilbert Riparian,” Tim advised. “Each spot offers a unique experience, with ample opportunities to hook a variety of fish species.”

Navigating the Urban Waters: Gear and Techniques

For urban anglers gearing up for a day on the water, Tim emphasized the importance of having the right equipment. “A spinning rod paired with live minnows works wonders in urban fishing hotspots,” Tim suggested. “Trout, a winter favorite, are accustomed to hatchery diets, making them susceptible to live bait. Come summer, catfish are on the prowl for power bait and nightcrawlers.”

As for the impact of weather and time of day on urban fishing conditions, Tim debunked the myths. “Any time of day is fair game for urban fishing,” he asserted. “But when it comes to local lakes, warmer waters in summer spur fish activity, resulting in more fruitful catches.”

Casting Off to Local Lakes

Transitioning from urban waters to expansive lakes, Tim’s recommendations tailored to angler preferences. “For those seeking quantity, Roosevelt and Bartlett lakes are prime picks,” Tim advised. “But if trophy-sized catches are on your agenda, Saguaro and Canyon Lake won’t disappoint.”

When it comes to bait selection and fishing methods in local lakes, Tim’s insights were invaluable. “For bass fishing, mastering the slow drop presentation is key,” Tim explained. “Drop shooting, as it’s known, involves gradually bringing your bait to the bottom and reeling it in slowly – a technique that’s proven its mettle in landing the big ones.”

Navigating Regulations and Seizing Memorable Moments

Before casting their lines, anglers must familiarize themselves with local regulations. “A valid fishing license is a must, and you can only purchase one online from AZGFD.com” Tim reminded.

Reflecting on memorable fishing experiences, Tim shared tales of triumphs on the water. “The biggest bass I ever reeled in weighed a whopping 9.9 pounds,” Tim recounted. “And I’m on a quest to break the elusive 10-pound mark – a pursuit that keeps me coming back for more.”

Navigating the Waters with Expert Advice

As our conversation drew to a close, Tim offered a final piece of advice for anglers embarking on their fishing adventures. “Support local businesses like Liar’s Korner,” Tim urged. “Not only will you find top-quality products, but you’ll also gain access to invaluable expertise honed over the years.”

In the realm of urban angling and beyond, Tim Hawkes stands as a beacon of wisdom, guiding anglers towards unforgettable fishing experiences on Arizona’s waters.
